Sunday Update: Redefining Normal

Redefining Normal

I thought the holidays would be a disaster.

Oh I had some no bake chocolate cookies and some orange cookies, enjoyed some Pecan Piehole Whiskey, and had three mini lemon biscuits.  Those were the treats I had decided ahead of time I was going to eat over the three days of celebration.  I didn’t eat any wheat (other than the biscuits) because I don’t eat wheat – I don’t like the consequences.  I also happily found out the Leon’s Pizza has a gluten free pizza!  It will be awhile before I have Piehole, the lethargy the next day was kinda yucky.  The cookies were mom’ recipes and worth every delicious moment – and I’ll do it again next Christmas.

I’ve set a new normal in eating.  No wheat, a ton of water as a preference (slowly giving up diet Mountain Dew), and more chicken, pork and fish and red meat twice a week.  It didn’t happen overnight, but it’s happening more as my normal.

My weight held its own over Christmas too.  I didn’t gain any weight.  Now that’s happy news as well!

This week I’m off to Tucson and weather in the 50’s and 60’s and lots of walking.  I’m adding in more exercise – walking.  Another new normal.  Just a little bit at a time, in weather I can stand.  I’ll continue at the gym when I get home – a little at a time.

Here’s what I found out: I was happy with my new normal.  I didn’t crave bread.  I loved the ham, didn’t miss all the super rich desserts, and the treats I chose were awesome! The water was ice cold and was so much better than any soda.  My taste buds are adjusting.  Little steps, one thing at a time, deciding what’s more important – my health or a moments satisfaction, making a conscious choice: these are now all part of my new normal.
