Gems from my Google Reader

I’ve started reading my Google Reader more than once a week.  I’m always looking for news and interesting things to share and in that quest I’ve saved quite a few blogs in my Reader.  Here’s just a few fun things from the past couple of days.

Google Alert for Hampton, Iowa:  I have the alert set pretty loosely so when an article about Hampton, Illinois and a contest in Iowa appeared I wasn’t surprised.  I usually just delete those by the title was “I hate my furnace contest”.  There’s a heating company in Davenport that holds a “I hate my furnace” contest every winter.  You submit your picture and they vote on the worst furnace.  Someone wins a brand new furnace. Everyone that sends in a picture receives a $100 gift certificate towards the purchase of their next furnace.  Don’t tell me this isn’t a great promotion!  I love it — creates a buzz, helps a family and brings customers to your door.  Read about it here.

Alexis Grant, The Traveling Writer: Writers Roundup  I love to read these, they are such great introductions to other writers!

Content In A Cottage: Martha Stewarts Cooking School  Rosemary of Content in a Cottage is someone you should know.  She posts short little things, often with pictures and makes you wish you were her neighbor.  I love this little post about Martha Stewart being shown now on PBS.  It followed two days after her post about the PBS response to Romney’s remark.

Please share with us the things you like to read in your Google Reader!

I follow almost all of my blogs in reader – it’s so much easier, and I have an app to use for my tablet, which makes it easy to read blogs on the go.

I used to have alerts set up at one time for my old hometown and I deleted them. I really need to turn them on again — thanks for the reminder there!!
