We’re gearing up for three big events in September: Cyndi Young comes the 3rd, RVTV is the 8th and Sheila Scarborough’s workshop is the 17th. That means lots of planning, organizing, herding cats, marketing and stress for me. Normally I’d turn to lots and lots of junk food to get me through. This past week had some junk food in it — but not nearly as much as prior years would have!
I’m working on asking myself this question before I eat the crap: What is bothering me that I’m reaching for this food?
Now sometimes, I can answer that question. I think logically, address the problem and don’t buy the junk. However, the devil on my shoulder still talks to me and says “you deserve it. It will make you feel better. Just get it.”
I find it interesting how many good memories are tied into food. Grandma During gave us real peppermints if we were good. Mom makes no baked chocolate cookies better than anyone in the world and it’s a real treat. Eating out with friends and laughing over dinner brings back many memories. Food is associated with family, love and fun. The little devil says “your mom is happy to make these for you. She knows you love them. How can you make her feel bad?” How do you break these habits? Creating new habits is one way. What other things can you do besides meet over food?
For those of us that are food addicts (and I think I am) making good choices are vital. I struggle with my distaste of vegetables and trying to find veggies that I like. I think it comes down to accepting you have a problem, and then dealing with it. Staying in the conversation of good health and talking and walking with friends who get it helps too. I post a picture once a week from my workouts and that holds me accountable. I talk to Chris Brogan and Todd Jordan about our workouts. I write about my week here. These are all ways I can battle the devil and win.
The journey continues. I’m enjoying the road to wellness, and that matters too. I’m seeing progress (look at those back muscles!) and that helps too.

We will be starting up our Early-Bird Boot Camps for the month of September on Monday. If you can’t make it on Monday, please feel free to start up on Wednesday! Classes meet Monday / Wednesday / Friday from 5:15 – 5:45 AM and 6:00 – 6:30 AM at Snap Fitness.
Cost is just $50 for the month!!!
