Jackson County, Kentucky Creatives
“Great to see a vibrant downtown on a Saturday night in Jackson County. Monthly cruise in with circle on the square music, and the Jackson County Creative Community signing folks up for the new web page. Paintings were donated for a free drawing. Thanks to Corner Cafe for staying open for the event. Always the first Saturday of every month at the square in McKee,” said Gregory Lakes. Greg is the Tourism Director for Jackson County, Kentucky. I met him on a visit to the county back in April of 2023.
On that visit, I met with several artists in a workshop space that one of them owned. It was exciting to see so many artists interested in staying in and creating art in their County. At that event, they figured out how to create an event that piggybacked on the local car show. It was a chance for them to showcase their work in an empty lot right across from where many cars were parked. The owner of the lot gladly gave permission to use it, at no charge. One of the women there had her husband come and weed whack that lot so folks could set up.
And they had a great time, sold some things, met other artists, and got to know their community better.
Most of all, they realized there was a big group of creatives in the area.
They got together more regularly, formed the Jackson County Creative Community, and now host activities, training, workshops, and events.
Here are a few shots from the latest first Saturday in McKee.
My thanks to Gregory for sharing the pictures!
