I’ll be headed to Brookings, SD this afternoon to speak at the 1 Million Cups event on Wednesday at 9 am.  1 Million Cups is a national weekly event.  You can read more at their website here.  They say it best:

1 Million Cups (1MC) is a simple way to engage entrepreneurs in communities around the world. Each week, the 1MC program offers two local entrepreneurs an opportunity to present their startups to a diverse audience of mentors, advisors, and entrepreneurs. Presenters prepare a 6 minute educational presentation and engage in 20 minutes of feedback and questioning after they present. Entrepreneurs gain insight into possible ways they can improve their businesses, gather realtime feedback, connect with a community that truly cares about their progress, and walk away feeling like they have advanced their business. The audience also learns a great deal from the presentations. Whether this is through passively listening or deeply engaging with the entrepreneurs, there is much to learn every week from these dynamic and diverse communities.

Scott Meyer of 9 Clouds invited me to speak along with James P. Gartin from Fargo, ND.  Scott says “Our largest 1MC ever is this Wednesday when James James P. Gartin and Deb During Debworks Brown join us to share secrets on how to develop a community. You don’t want to miss this one as we discuss how to make Brookings great! This and future 1MC are at the South Dakota Children’s Museum of South Dakota. We will also share a HUGE announcement on an upcoming fall event in Brookings. James is the President of the Fargo-Moorhead Economic Development Corporation and Deb is the Director of the Webster City, IA Chamber of Commerce. They have used innovative ideas to make their communities vibrant and will share their lessons with us.It doesn’t stop there. James and Deb will join anyone interested for a walking tour of downtown Brookings from 10:15-11:15 am followed by a round table discussion on community development starting at 11:15 am at the Brookings Area Chamber of Commerce and Convention Bureau.”

We will be talking about how to build a community you want to live in.  What could be more exciting than that?
