Sunday Update: Food on the Road

This past week I spent in Tucson participating in professional development and year two towards my IOM designation. I stayed at an airbnb location instead of a hotel.  Smart move.  Breakfast each day was a Keurig coffee and hot gluten free oatmeal.  And lots of water.  During most lunches we were treated by the Institute board and it was primarily healthy.  Mexican, Mediterranean, fruit, box lunches and the like.  It was a half mile walk to lunch (and another half mile back).

Nighttime is where the danger lie.  First were cocktails.  I would start drinking a large glass of water before I decided on a cocktail.  I had two gin and tonics – all week.  The water filled me up and did the trick.  Another big idea was to go out with a group.  We ate slower, had great conversation, lots of laughs and ate less too. There was no sitting at home, watching tv and gorging on snack food.  Each meal was a deliberate choice.

What I learned about food while traveling :

  1. Go out with your friends and enjoy your evening
  2. drink a lot of water (and not soda)
  3. be a food blogger – take pictures of your food and tell the story about it (Facebook and twitter and Instagram too!)
  4. Walk more – park further away – take a walk after dinner and enjoy your surroundings.

How does this translate when I get back home:

  1. keep snack food out of the house
  2. eat at the dining table at home and don’t be distracted by tv
  3. go out with friends and enjoy the evening
  4. drink more water and leave the soda alone
  5. prepare my food in advance, bring lunch to work.
